New publication by CMMU faculty member in SJR Q1 journal

Written by Chatchai Chatpinyakoop on .

Research on predicting currency crises by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Roy Kouwenberg and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phornchanok Cumperayot (Chulalongkorn University) has been accepted for publication in the Journal of International Money and Finance. Currency crises are often preceded by a wide range of economic problems, such as high debt, declining international reserves, or balance of payments problems. Applying multivariate extreme value theory, this research tests whether currency crises can be predicted using macro-economic and financial variables. The key findings are that nearly all fundamental variables have no relation with extreme exchange rate returns, except for the real interest rate. The findings may help explain why existing early warning systems for currency crises perform poorly out of sample.

This research was supported by an international research grant from the Global Association of Risk Professionals. The Journal of International Money and Finance is a high quality scholarly journal in the field of international finance, published by Elsevier. The journal is listed in the ISI-SSCI and Scopus databases; it is ranked in the 1st quartile (Q1) of the Scimago journal ranking, and had a SSCI impact factor of 1.02 in 2011. CMMU faculty member to publish two articles

Written by Chatchai Chatpinyakoop on .

Asst. Prof. Dr. Winai Wongsurawat, CMMU faculty member will soon publish two new articles in the International Journal of Aviation Management and the Journal of Agribusiness in Developing and Emerging Economics. The articles are:
Sowawattanakul, P., Wongsurawat, W. (2013), Domestic airline networks and passenger demand in Thailand after deregulation. International Journal of Aviation Management 2(1/2) 35-53.
Wongsurawat, W., Weerathamrongsak, P. (2013), The rubber industry in Thailand: a review of past achievements and future prospects. Journal of Agribusiness in Developing and Emerging Economics. 3(1), forthcoming.

The first article, “Domestic airline networks and passenger demand in Thailand after deregulation”, studies how different types of airlines have reconfigured their networks after deregulation reforms. Results show that the dominant full-service carrier has moved toward a hub-and-spoke model, while smaller players have adopted additional point-to-point network features. The analysis also reveals that airports that start-up airlines choose to enter often enjoy significant surges in total passengers.

The second article, “The rubber industry in Thailand: a review of past achievements and future prospects.”, argues that the recent success of the Thai rubber industry stems from the competitiveness of local firms in the upstream industry and the leadership of foreign firms in the downstream sector. To further strengthen competitiveness, a more concerted effort to encourage innovation and technology absorption by local downstream firms is recommended.

The abstracts of both articles can be found on the CMMU research website.
